Most commonly used whenever there is a flat tire, a car jack is probably the most used tool for a lot of people, even if it is every few years. Learn how to use a car jack safely.

•	There are many types of jacks, but the most common is the scissor jack which comes with the vehicle. This will usually be in the trunk secured under the spare wheel with a screw. That’s the first place to check, and if it is not there then you should check the owner’s manual to see where the darn thing is!

•	Many people think that the stock jack is fine for the occasional changing of the tire situation but there are also many that think of them flaky at best. As long as you find a nice level surface with no roll either will do, although for extra safety go with a hydraulic trolley jack – these take up a lot more space but they are easier to use too. They work through the use of a lever that “pumps” up the vehicle in effect, with a safety release valve typically operated with a screwdriver once it’s been used. Under no circumstances should you work under your car without a jack stand additionally supporting the vehicle – this is especially true if you are using a bog standard manufacturers jack stands

Getting Started

•	Make sure you know how to work the jack before starting. It’s clockwise on a scissor jack to raise the car and anti-clockwise to lower it. Instructions are typically on the side of the jack so have a look.

•	Make sure that the stands and car are on a flat surface. Ensure that the handbrake is on and that the car is either in reverse or first gear. Additionally use wheel chocks for extra safety and peace of mind.

•	In the mid-section of the vehicle there should be jack points near to the front and rear wheels. Look for an indent on the bodywork under the car to see where it should go. Typically there will be a reinforced lip that is specially designed for supporting the weight of the car that runs along each side. If you are unsure, check the owner’s manual (yes, again!) since every vehicle is different. Place the cup of the jack under the lip and turn the scissor jack clockwise/ pump the lever of your trolley jack to start to raise up the car.

•	After a few turns you should be able to tell if the vehicle is gripped correctly. Give the side of the car a gently nudge to see if it is secured. If it is, then continue lifting, otherwise lower and repeat the last step.

•	Once you have got the vehicle to the required height then be sure to place a jack stand under the vehicle. If you are just changing the tire then this is not an absolute necessity but if you are going to be working under the car it’s a MUST DO. It’s not enought to know how to use a car jack safely – cars can and do slip, so be safe.

•	Remove the stands and lower the vehicle once done, and store your jack in the trunk for another few years!

Make Sure That You Put Safety First When Looking at The Features of Car Stands…

If you are going to be tuning or repairing your car often, it is in your best interest to purchase some quality car jack stands for your vehicle. Many individuals are injured or hurt each year by falling cars – mainly due to them not using the correct equipment to support the vehicle.

Normal jacks are not enough to adequately support a car for an extended period of time, which is why reinforced stands are used instead. They don’t even cost that much money and they can be potential lifesavers. If you don’t have a set already, now would be the time to think about getting some.

Here’s some advice about what to look for in the numerous stands on sale:

Safe Working Load: The SWL shows how much weight the jack stand can support. You can find many different rating available: heavy duty 6 ton stands, and normal 3 ton jack stands. As long as the jack stands rating is above 2, this will be more than enough to raise a normal car.

Type of Metal Used: Also try to find out what kind of metal the stand is made from before buying. The best makes have an iron construction, which is kinder on the underside of the car and will scrape less.

Size: The larger and heavier the vehicle to be raised, the bigger the jack is going to have to be. For SUV’s for example, a stand with a height of over 400 mm is recommended.

Base: Look for rubber feet at the bottom of the stand – this will prevent it from slipping and sinking in softer ground. Make sure you know how to use a jack before you undertake the process.

Often overlooked, stands for vehicles are an important part of any mechanic’s tools. If you are going to be working under a vehicle you want to know that you are safe, and a stand gives you this reassurance. When you go to purchase a stand, have a look for the key features: the weight supported, the metal construction, and the height. As long as the requirements are met then you will have a tool that will last you for many years of loyal service!

Years ago, if you said to someone that you had an inflatable car jack they would have looked at you and thought you mad! But there are a few of these kinds of models that are making the rounds at the moment, and it must be said that they are surprisingly effective.

Titan Exhaust Jack

First up there is the exhaust jack made by Titan. Relatively cheap when compared to the other car air exhaust jack, it nevertheless is getting pretty good reviews on the web. Like the name implies, you can either connect the 15 feet hose to the tailpipe to fill up the tough outer material. My first thought was that it might burst but then I found out that it’s made from woven polyester which is then coated with PVC, so there is little to no chance of that happening. Check out the cool video below, you can also check out more information at Sigmamotive if you are interested. For those dummies who say it is unsafe, obviously you need to use jackstands down if you are going to work underneath the car first…

SPECIFICATIONS
Model	Diameter (cm)	Height (cm)	Maximum Lift Capacity(ton)	Maximum Lift Capacity (lbs)	Applicable Vehicle Weight(ton)	Maximum Pressure (bar)
TTC-2.0	43	43	1.02	2249	2	0.7
TTC-3.0	53	53	1.54	3395	3	0.7
TTC-4.0	61	56	2.07	4564	4	0.7

Bushranger X-Jack Arb Recovery Gear

There’s also the Recovery Gear exhaust jack, and this is priced at a far higher price bracket since it is meant to be used by adventure types and their 4×4’s when they get stuck in sand or rough terrain. Not really a pure car jack then. It has to be said that the Bushranger X Jack is pretty cool however, but it’s recommended that you take an air compressor along with you just in case you have problems with your exhaust.

One item that many people tend to forget that they should use when working under their vehicle is a decent set of wheel chocks. These are very cheap to buy and give that extra stability that is needed to prevent any movement that might make things “unsafe”.

A wheel chock is an essential safety item – cars can’t go against the force of gravity, and the slope of a chock lets the vehicle stay in place while work is carried out. Working without a chock could mean the vehicle ends up rolling over your head – a less than satisfactory outcome for a day of tinkering.

Ok, ok, so a wheel chock may be an incredibly boring tool to explain, but they are absolutely essential. So if you don’t own a set then their low cost makes them unmissable.

Using a Wheel Chock

Which way is the ground in your garage sloping? Most people will have a flat surface, so installing a chock on each side of the wheel is the best bet. The slope of the chock should curve around with the wheel almost perfectly. Kick it in to place till it’s nice and snug, and then proceed to working on your vehicle in safety. Once you have used the chock just remove it in the opposite fashion. Some models have a pull handle that helps you to remove it easily.

Wheel chocks – Boring but Essential!

Lifting up our vehicles to perform repairs is something that is necessary for all of us on occasion. To make sure you are safe while doing this, make sure that you have a pair of jack stands ready to take the full weight of the vehicle.

It is important to use car jack stands and not just a simple jack, since jacks can and do fail every so often – and you don’t want to be under the car when that happens! Once you have seen an accident happen once, you will make sure that you take proper safety precautions from then on, but please take my word for it – you must use jack stands if you are going to be working under a car or similar vehicle.

They only take a few moments to slide underneath and securely support the vehicle, and you can then work on it in safety.
Here is how to utilize automobile jack stands correctly:

Using a normal jack, lift the vehicle up. Once the chassis is off the ground, you can move onto the next task.

Look under the car to see where the jacking points are located, or you can look at your owner’s manual. If you are not sure then the axles are normally a good place to start.

Take a jack stand and position one under the jack point, make sure it is properly aligned.

Now, using the single jack slowly let the vehicle down bit by bit, still checking to see if the stands are in the right

place.

The stands should now be supporting all of the weight of the vehicle. You should now be able to remove the jack. Walk to the front of your automobile, and place your hands on the hood. Give it a gentle lateral push to make sure it there is no rocking.

You can now work under the vehicle without fear of it falling. To lower it, repeat the procedures in reverse. Remove the jack and stands once finished. That was easy, wasn’t it?

Jack stands are great and useful items of garage equipment, but how do you tell a good make from a bad one?

A jack stand is used to hold an automobile above the ground for extended periods of time, after it has been initially lifted by a trolley or floor jack. It is placed on the frame rail or axle of the auto, or on any part of the car which has been designed to be load bearing. Through the use of jack stands you can be confident that the auto will be unlikely to collapse when working underneath it.

Just about every car shop sells their own brands, with different types of support and construction available. If you have never purchased one before, look for these safety features:

First, check the quality of the finish. A well made jack stand should have clean welds and appear solid. If there are any signs of rust or wear before it has even left the shelf then leave it there. Also check for rough edges – another sign of a poor stand.

The most stable auto jack stands have wide rubber feet that won’t sink in soft ground, and they also add more stability. Avoid stands that have no feet as these can only be used on concrete. Even then, these stands should be ditched in favour of feet based models or, even better, stands that have a continuous base.

The type of support mechanism normally used is either peg or ratchet based. Even though the least expensive stands are peg types, you should go for one that uses a ratchet for a greater amount of control over the stand. Plus peg based models can be quite awkward to use, since it is often difficult to get the correct height. If you really HAVE to use a peg based stand, make sure it has a safety catch and that all the pegs fit before first use.

Jack stands are so cheap in comparison with other automobile tools, so there is no excuse for using inferior models. As long as you check a stand for the proper safety features before buying or using, you should be always be safe when working underneath your vehicle.

Before commencing any type of repair of fix under a car, you must first give it proper support before starting. There have been many accidents over the years where improper equipment was used to support a car, such as bricks and breeze blocks – and these materials have collapsed, injuring the person below the chassis.

There really is no need in this day and age for these kinds of unsafe projects. These days there are a wide variety of jacks and stands to full support any vehicle for any amount of time. While you would use a floor or trolley jack to initially lift an auto, to sustain the lift indefinitely you are going to need some jack stands. These are used to take all the weight of an auto without fear of the chassis collapsing.

Jacks stands have a cupped design at the top that support a jack point, frame rail or axle on the car, preventing the car from sliding laterally. You can be sure that once some stands have been utilized to support the chassis correctly, it’s never going to fall in a million years!

Traditional jacks have a problem in that their seals can on occasion fail, leading to a falling car -sometimes when an unfortunate soul is underneath! Now, I’m sure some of you people out there reading this will take objection to what I have said, since you have lifted up your automobile on a trolley jack plenty of times. But the statistics don’t lie – car jacks do fail more frequently that you would think. For the low cost of a set of jack stands, why risk the pain of breaking multiple bones at once?

Jacks are only really designed to temporarily lift a car off the ground just of long enough to change tyres, not for extended usage. In addition to this, a jack stand can support far greater weights in comparison, making them even more essential if you have a heavy auto such as a SUV.

Jack stands are designed for extended use; I’ve had some underneath cars for months on end to take the weight off the suspension. It’s pretty hard to find stories of jack stands failing, so don’t risk your own personal safety – think about investing in a set of jack stands!

When a mechanic or car enthusiast works on an auto, his personal safety should be his number one concern. However, injuries in a car garage caused by collapsing cars happen every day in America, and the main cause of this is that the proper equipment is not used correctly.

The main tool used to support cars is called a jack stand. When positioned under a raised car at the jack points, axles or other load bearing places, it will support the car should it slip slip.

Jack stands are not infallible however, but having multiple sets to support the car is very safe, with each stand sharing a portion of the load each. If only one stand is supporting all the weight of a vehicle, then it only takes for it to be in the wrong place for the car to collapse. If multiple stands are in use, then if one is in the wrong place the other will take the strain.

Since stands are very inexpensive, why aren’t they used more often? Mechanics say that using stands is awkward and time consuming. However, spending time setting them up correctly is infinitely preferable to being crushed by a 3 ton vehicle. Trying to save time by balancing a car using one jack stand is equally crazy!

An alternative to using multiple stands is a hydraulic jack stand. With one of these models, the lifting post is prevented from ever accidently falling. The post features teeth that grip the casing should the hydraulic system fail. If time really is that important to you then the mechanic should buy one of these, but he should be aware that using multiple jack stands can be just as effective.

Safety should always come first when jacking up an automobile. Use as many stands as necessary to ensure redundancy should the car start to slip – the more the better! If a mechanic can afford it, and is looking to save as much time as possible then he should choose hydraulic jack stands. While correctly lifting a car can be awkward and time consuming, the amount of time spent doing it correctly will be time saved in hospital later on!
